You Can Create a Professional Quality 3D Cover for Your Ebook – Free!
Whether you author novels or write informative tutorials to sell or giveaway on your blog, promoting with a 3D cover can make a difference for you. A 3D cover stands out, usually looks more professional (if created correctly), and grabs a reader’s attention.

I’ve written and self-published devotional books and a memoir and have also helped other authors with their own self-publishing projects and book promotions. Starting out, I wasn’t sure how authors made those fancy images of their books and imagined they must have used expensive software. As a matter of fact, after researching I discovered many did. Tutorials I found required Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, and while I know those programs are amazing, I didn’t have either. Plus, I couldn’t afford them.
Searching high and low for free alternatives, I came away disappointed each time. All I found DID allow me to make 3D covers, but they all looked amateurish and, quite honestly, cheap. Bleh. Of course, I’m not a graphic designer in any way shape or form, so I acknowledge that might have been part of it. Or at least I acknowledged it at the time (I’ve since discovered that even I can make a professional quality 3D cover).
Eventually, I discovered a graphic designer who created 3D covers for authors for only $15, a price I could afford. I hired her to create several for me, and she gave me excellent 3D images each time. However, when I began to offer more and more ebooks on my blog, even $15 a pop began to add up to a price I didn’t want to pay.
More research followed, and I found an amazing site, Placeit.
Placeit literally has thousands of mockups and templates to choose from, and best of all, many are free. Those that aren’t free are still so inexpensive, I could afford as many as I needed. For example, I created and downloaded FREE an image of a girl holding one of ‘my’ books. I also created a 3D cover of the same book with a transparent background so I could use it in ads, and it only cost me $8! Plus, you’d never know a professional graphic artist didn’t create it. It looks just like the ones I’ve had created by the graphic designer! Yea!! Check out these examples:
If you need to design your cover first, check out this post – How to Create a Free Ebook Cover in Canva. Then, you’ll be ready to head to Placeit to create your 3D cover.
To use Placeit, a login is required, but it doesn’t cost a dime. They have multiple options for pricing so choose what meets your needs. I haven’t signed up for a monthly subscription yet and instead make my images on an as-needed basis. If I’m ever to the point I need to make more than 3 or 4 a month, I’ll look into a subscription. I still use their free options more than anything!
